Fluendo turns 20 years of coding the future of multimedia technology

They say time flies when you are having fun; over these 20 years, we sure have. Fluendo was born to empower people to enjoy, communicate, and work together through innovative multimedia technologies, providing practical solutions combining the best open-source and proprietary worlds. With more than 400 clients throughout these years, we are in a good direction to achieve our goal. 

As we celebrate Fluendo's 20th anniversary, we analyze the path of two decades of innovation, dedication, and contribution to video and audio technology —from our beginnings in 2004 to becoming a leader in solutions that push the boundaries of what's possible. Join us as we reflect on our journey, highlight our achievements, and explore the future. 

The beginning of the journey 

Fluendo was founded in Barcelona in 2004, focusing on filling the gap in Linux environments with efficient and legal codecs. To achieve this, we brought aboard the leading developers of GStreamer, a promising multimedia framework, to provide the foundations of a professional ecosystem to meet and exceed the performance of current applications in the market. With this, we began using this technology, and the rest is history. 

We signed a formal agreement with the most important patent holders in the market: MPEG LA, Microsoft, VIA Licensing, Technicolor, and Dolby that, combined with our experience, let us develop the Fluendo Codec Pack, our flagship product, and the successful entrance of Fluendo as a main actor in providing multimedia solutions across different industries. 

A two-decade expedition

Multimedia technology has evolved drastically, transforming the way we interact with content. With streaming services, virtual reality, and the massification of artificial intelligence, multimedia is at the heart of modern user experiences. It enhances communication, education, and entertainment, making it indispensable in today's world. 

Fluendo has played a crucial role in this evolution, from end-user applications to specific components embedded into more than 27 million devices shipped.  We have helped numerous companies reach their goals by providing consulting services to support them in any challenge they might face, accelerate the release of products to the market, and even acquire multimedia knowledge through our GStreamer training. 

Lately, we have focused on working with artificial intelligence and computer vision technology, allowing us to approach more significant and complex challenges. Thanks to the engineering team's research and efforts, we can develop new solutions that significantly benefit multiple industries.

The pillar of our knowledge: Open Source 

Fluendo has always stood for Open Source, and GStreamer is where everything started. We believe in the power of this framework and how it can shape the future of multimedia. That's why our commitment goes not only to its use but also to the contributions we can make to make the open-source community even bigger. 

We've made around 20 thousand contributions to the open-source to numerous repositories, allowing other developers to create more efficient and versatile multimedia applications.
