Fluendo has been selected to participate in the 6G-XR Open Call 3 with our project LCEVC for Enhanced 6G-XR Holographic Streaming Services.
This award marks another step forward in our mission to advance real-time, low-latency communication technologies. It aligns with our R&D roadmap, including our innovation project Lynx focused on next-generation codecs, the implementation of new transport protocols such as QUIC and WebTransport for emerging use cases, and browser compatibility through our open-source project gst.wasm.
LCEVC-6G-XR: Powering the Future of Holographic XR
The 6G-XR initiative aims to define the communication infrastructure that will power the next generation of XR services. Our project, “LCEVC for Enhanced 6G-XR Holographic Streaming Services”, combines cutting-edge codec technology with edge computing to deliver next-level immersive experiences.
At the core is MPEG-5 Low Complexity Enhancement Video Coding (LCEVC), integrated into GStreamer and delivered over QUIC-based transport protocols for low-latency, high-quality streaming.
Leveraging LCEVC for Efficient and Scalable Streaming
Lynx is our innovation project to explore how next-generation codecs can enhance our existing products, enable new industry solutions (e.g., DaaS, VDI, remote desktop), and open opportunities in emerging fields like XR. In 6G-XR we will leverage LCEVC to enhance the scalability and efficiency of XR streaming services:
- Optimize real-time encoding of high-resolution volumetric video
- Reduce bandwidth without compromising visual quality
- Ensure stable operation with the 6G-XR Remote Renderer
- Validate LCEVC’s interoperability and low-compute requirements
- Enable low-latency encoding of 2D/360° streams.
QUIC and WebTransport: The Future of Streaming Protocols
Our integration of QUIC and WebTransport with GStreamer showcases how these next-gen protocols enhance scalability, interactivity, and performance for immersive media.
GstWASM: Open-Source GStreamer for the Web
gst.wasm is our open-source initiative that brings GStreamer to the browser via WebAssembly. This project enables:
- Lightweight, high-performance media workflows in web environments.
- Seamless integration with new transport protocols like QUIC and WebTransport and new codecs like LCEVC.
- Broader compatibility for XR and holographic use cases.
As part of our 6G-XR contributions, we are enhancing gst.wasm to support more complex streaming pipelines, while staying committed to the open-source community.
Contributing to the 6G-XR Ecosystem
Through this project, Fluendo will:
- Enhance infrastructure scalability via codec-agnostic LCEVC integration.
- Lower operational and energy costs, contributing to sustainability goals.
- Provide benchmark data and real-world evaluations of QUIC and WebTransport.
- Develop a new web player optimized for WebTransport streaming
- Deliver a GStreamer-based XR showcase showcase on the 6G-XR South Node at i2CAT in Barcelona
A Strategic Step in Our Innovation Journey
This grant represents a strategic milestone in our innovation roadmap. It enables Fluendo to push the boundaries of efficient, scalable XR streaming, powered by open standards, next-gen codecs, and our ongoing commitment to the GStreamer community.
Stay tuned as we bring real-time holographic communication closer to reality.
